What is test case redundancy, and why does it happen?

Redundancy isn’t just literal duplication, two tests with the same name and the same steps. That’s the easiest form to spot, and also the rarest. The real problem shows up more subtly: test cases that validate the same system behavior under conditions that add no new information.

For example: you have a test that validates the checkout flow of an e-commerce platform with a user named “John Smith” and another with “Jane Doe.” If what’s being verified is the behavior of the flow, not some logic specifically tied to the user’s name, those two tests are redundant. You’re not covering two distinct situations; you’re running the same scenario twice with data that doesn’t change the expected outcome.

The most common sources of this problem are:

  • Growth without curation: Every sprint brings new tests, but no one has the habit of reviewing the old ones. The suite just keeps growing.
  • Misaligned teams: In larger projects, different people create tests for the same modules without knowing what already exists.
  • Coverage by volume: The mindset that “more tests is always better” leads teams to create cases in quantity rather than diversity.
  • Scripts copied from other projects: without analyzing whether they fit the current context.

The key point is that redundancy isn’t harmless. The same Ortask study found a strong correlation (0.55) between redundancy levels and the likelihood of bugs in the software, meaning redundant test suites tend to be associated with systems that have more defects in production. It’s not that redundancy directly causes the bugs, but it’s an indicator of practices and processes that need attention.

How to identify what’s cluttering your suite

Before structuring anything new, it’s worth cleaning up what already exists. Some practical criteria for this audit:

Same preconditions, same actions, same expected result. If two tests share all three of these elements, one of them can probably go. The exception is when there’s a documented risk justification, for example, a historical bug that came back more than once in that specific path.

Data variation that’s irrelevant to the logic. Like in the checkout example above: ask yourself whether the variation in input data actually changes the expected system behavior. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t warrant a separate test case.

Edge cases with no history of being triggered. Tests covering extreme situations have value, when there’s evidence that the path represents a real risk. Edge cases created “just in case” that haven’t caught a single bug in months of execution deserve a second look.

A good starting point for this analysis is your suite’s execution reports. Identify which tests have never failed independently, meaning, when they fail, it’s always alongside other tests covering the same module. That’s a sign coverage is concentrated around the same spot.

Techniques for structuring test cases without redundancy from the start

Treating the symptom is valid, but the goal is to avoid needing this kind of cleanup regularly. There are techniques that, when applied at the time of test creation, reduce redundancy structurally.

Equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis

These are classic test design techniques built on a simple idea: if a set of inputs produces the same system behavior, you only need one representative from that set, not every possible value.

With equivalence partitioning, you group inputs into classes that the system treats identically. For an age field that accepts values between 18 and 65, there are three classes: below 18, between 18 and 65, above 65. You need one test case per class, not one for every possible number.

Boundary value analysis complements this by testing the extremes of each class (17, 18, 65, 66 in the example above), which is where conditional logic bugs tend to hide.

These two techniques together allow you to cover system behavior with a minimum number of cases that maximize the chances of detecting defects.

Intent-driven tests, not step-by-step scripts

This is one of the mindset shifts with the greatest practical impact. When a test case describes every click, every field filled out, every screen transition, it becomes tightly coupled to the implementation. Any layout change breaks the test, and teams working with Selenium or Cypress know exactly how much that costs in maintenance.

When the test describes the intent, “the user should be able to complete checkout after adding an item to the cart”, it stays stable even when the interface changes. This approach also naturally prevents you from creating two cases that cover the same intent through slightly different scripts.

Separating contract tests from flow tests

A common mistake is testing the same validation across multiple layers without a clear reason. Imagine a business rule that says: “the SSN must be valid to create an account.” That validation might appear in a unit test for the validation function, in an API test, and in an E2E test, three times, covering the same behavior.

The question that should guide this decision is: at which layer does this validation need to be verified for you to feel confident? In most cases, the answer is: at the layer closest to the code (unit or integration). The E2E test should verify the complete flow, not re-validate every business rule that’s already been covered in the layers below.

This clear separation reduces overlap between layers and makes each test responsible for answering a different question.

Test suite hierarchy with clear ownership

Organizing tests into layers with defined purposes is another way to prevent cases from overlapping. A well-structured suite typically has:

  • Smoke tests: verify that the system is up and running. There are few of them, they run fast, and they cover critical paths at a surface level.
  • Regression tests: verify that existing functionality keeps working after changes. They cover more scenarios, but with scope defined by module or feature.
  • Critical flow tests: verify the paths that carry the highest business risk, signup, payment, authentication. These are the most detailed.

When each layer has a clear responsibility, it becomes easier to figure out where a new test case belongs, and to spot whether something already covers that need.

Naming conventions and taxonomy: small details that prevent big messes

A well-defined naming convention is one of the simplest and most underrated ways to fight redundancy. When two tests have generic names like test_login_1 and test_login_2, it’s impossible to tell, before reading the code, whether they cover different things.

A useful convention includes at least three elements: module, expected behavior, and condition. For example:

  • checkout_should_complete_purchase_with_valid_card
  • checkout_should_reject_expired_card
  • checkout_should_display_error_when_item_out_of_stock

With names like these, you can scan a module’s test list and immediately spot overlap, without opening every file. It also makes it much easier for someone else on the team to know what already exists before creating a new case.

Beyond naming, maintaining a taxonomy through tags or categories (by module, criticality, test type) makes it easier to filter and run subsets of the suite when needed, which also improves report readability.

Ongoing maintenance: keeping the problem from coming back

Even with solid creation practices, redundancy will creep back in without a continuous curation process. A few practices that tend to work well:

  • Periodic suite reviews. A quarterly review to identify obsolete, outdated, or newly redundant test cases. It doesn’t have to be a full audit every time, clear criteria for archiving or removing cases is enough.
  • Objective removal criteria. A test can be removed when it hasn’t caught a single bug in the past six months, its behavior is already covered by a broader test case, or the feature it was testing has been discontinued. Documenting these criteria avoids long discussions when the time comes to make a call.
  • Integrating curation into the development workflow. Test review shouldn’t be a separate task, scheduled for whenever there’s time, because that time rarely comes. A practical approach is to include a check in each feature’s definition of done: “Is there an existing test that is now covered by this new case?”
