The Importance of E2E Testing: Put an End to Software Failures

The test suite passed, the build went live, the deploy happened, and then the call comes in. A user found a bug nobody had tested for. The checkout flow breaks when the delivery address is different from the billing address. Login works in isolation, but when combined with an expired session and an API redirect, everything falls apart.

What is an E2E test?
An E2E (end-to-end) test validates the complete flow of an application from start to finish, simulating the behavior of a real user. Rather than isolating a function or checking whether two modules communicate, it walks the entire path: opens the screen, fills out the form, calls the API, persists to the database, returns the response, all chained together, just as it happens in production.
This doesn’t make other types of testing obsolete. Each layer covers a different angle. Unit tests are fast and precise for internal logic. Integration tests ensure that contracts between components are working. E2E closes the loop: it tests the behavior the user will actually experience.

The E2E process step by step

- Planning: everything starts by mapping real user journeys, what people do in the system, in what order, with what data. Test scenarios need to reflect that behavior, not the ideal behavior the development team imagines.
- Environment setup: the test environment should be as close to production as possible. That includes APIs, databases, third-party integrations, and, when real data isn’t available, synthetic data that simulates the volume and diversity of actual usage.

- Test creation and execution: scripts describe the scenarios and are run against all components involved: front-end, back-end, database, and APIs. Teams that don’t use scripts rely on manual testing, which limits scale.

- Defect resolution: identified issues are fixed and tests are re-run to confirm the fix worked and didn’t introduce new problems in the process.
- Automation and continuous integration: the final step is integrating E2E tests into the CI/CD pipeline. Teams that adopt this practice can catch issues earlier in the development cycle, when they’re still simpler and cheaper to fix.
