Types of software testing and when to use each one

Every development team tests software. The question is whether they do it strategically, knowing exactly which type of test to apply at each stage.
There are dozens of types of tests, and choosing the wrong one at the wrong time has a real cost, lost development time, expensive rework, or in the worst case, production failures that reach the end user. Manual vs. automated testing: what’s the difference?

Manual testing is exactly what it sounds like: a person opening the system, clicking through it, interacting with it, and checking whether the expected behavior occurred. It has value, especially for exploring unexpected scenarios, but it comes with high costs, low scalability, and human error risk.

The main types of software testing
1. Unit testing
This is the type of testing closest to the code. It verifies individual functions and methods, the function that calculates a discount, the component that formats a phone number. The goal is to ensure that each small piece of the system works in isolation, before connecting it to anything else.
When to use: during development, continuously. Ideally, on every commit. Unit tests are the cheapest to write and the fastest to run, a CI server can execute hundreds of them in seconds.
2. Integration testing
Tests whether different modules or services in the system communicate correctly. Does the database query return what it should? Can microservice A talk to microservice B without losing data?
When to use: when connecting new components, when changing existing integrations, or when a new external service is brought into the system. Integration tests cost more than unit tests because they require parts of the environment to be up and running, but they’re essential to ensure that the pieces work together, not just in isolation.
3. Functional testing
Here the perspective shifts: instead of looking at the code, functional testing looks at business requirements. Given that the user does X, does the system return Y as specified?
This is a common point of confusion with integration testing. The practical difference: an integration test might be satisfied with verifying that the database connection works; a functional test goes further and asks whether the returned value is correct according to the business rule.
When to use: to validate that the system does what it promised, and keeps doing it after every change.

4. End-to-end (E2E) testing
Replicates a user’s behavior through a complete flow in the system. Login, navigation, form submission, checkout, confirmation email. E2E testing validates that all of this works in sequence, in an environment close to production.
When to use: for the most critical flows in the product, the ones where a failure causes direct impact on the user or on revenue.
5. Acceptance testing
This is the test that answers the most important question from a business perspective: is the system ready to go live?
Unlike functional testing, which validates technical requirements, acceptance testing typically involves stakeholders outside the engineering team, business representatives, product owners, sometimes even customers, and verifies whether the system as a whole meets expectations.
When to use: before major releases, as the final gate before client delivery or production launch.
6. Performance testing
Measures how the system behaves under load. How many simultaneous requests can it handle? Does response time stay acceptable with 10,000 active users? Where is the bottleneck?
When to use: before launches with high expected traffic, after significant architectural changes, and proactively in systems with seasonal usage spikes, e-commerce on Black Friday, e-learning platforms during enrollment periods, and so on.
7. Smoke testing
The most basic check of all: is the system up? Do the core features respond?
The name comes from electronics: when you power on a new circuit, the first thing you check is whether it starts smoking. In software, the logic is similar, before running a heavy test suite, it’s worth checking whether the environment is even working properly.
When to use: right after a new build or deploy. If the smoke test fails, there’s no point running the more expensive tests. If it passes, you’re good to go.
Exploratory testing: when going off-script is intentional
There is one type of testing that doesn’t follow a script, and that’s a feature, not a flaw.
In exploratory testing, the tester uses their experience and creativity to navigate the system without a fixed plan, looking for unexpected behavior, inconsistencies, and bugs that no automated script could have anticipated. It’s the human eye looking for what wasn’t predicted.
When to use: alongside automation, especially after releases, in areas of high UX complexity, or when the product has gone through significant changes. An exploratory testing session doesn’t need to be long, the recommendation is to define a clear scope and time limit (up to two hours per session) to stay focused.
Exploratory testing doesn’t replace automation, and automation doesn’t replace exploratory testing. They’re complementary.

There’s no universal formula. The right strategy depends on the product’s stage, the size of the team, and which parts of the system are most critical. That said, a few principles tend to work well in most cases.
Start from the bottom: unit and integration tests are the cheapest and fastest, they should be the densest layer of your suite. Add functional and E2E tests for the highest-impact flows. Use smoke tests on every deploy, and save exploratory testing for periodic sessions or after significant changes.
